We had snow :)

Look at my BIG dog :)

For midnight, wherever you are...

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?
And days of auld lang syne, my dear,
And days of auld lang syne.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?

We twa hae run aboot the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine.
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld lang syne.
Sin' auld lang syne, my dear,
Sin' auld lang syne,
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld ang syne.

We twa hae sported i' the burn,
From morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

Sin' auld lang syne, my dear,
Sin' auld lang syne.
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

And ther's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We're having a party and a piper :) You're invited!!! Happy New Year when we get there...

Worst Celebrity Couple: Kid Rock and Pammy

Favourite Music of 2006: Nickleback. Snow Patrol. Dierks Bentley.

Best Sporting Moment: Liverpool FC winning the FA Cup. Tiger Woods winning the Open not long after his father's death. The Oilers getting to the finals of the NHL Stanley Cup.

My New Year's Resolutions are simply to get fit and lose weight. I pretty much nailed the other ones from last year. And to try and relax more. I'm the queen of uptight, sitting here with everything crossed. Sheesh. I'm very bad at relaxing.

I'm open to suggestions ;)

Best and Worst

Had a great Christmas--hope you did too :) Will tell you about my excellent gifts at a later date. Wanted to do a Best and Worst of 2006--like People only less meaningful ;)

Best Day of 2006:

I know this should be something writing related because I had an ebook release and I sold on proposal, but that's not it. This would have to be split into the best two days of 2006. My brother's wedding day and my brother-in-law's wedding day back home in August and September. Great family days, reminding us what we miss by living so far away. Not that we have any real choice in the matter.

Worst Day of 2006:

My son's birthday--September 4th. The day Steve Irwin died. Whenever I see a picture of Steve Irwin, I can feel my throat close and tears heat my eyes. It still hurts and I didn't even know him.

Looking forward to:

This is so pitiful. I mean, really. Susan Elisabeth Philips Natural Born Charmer released in February--yay!!!! And (hopefully) driving out west next summer.

Merry Christmas Everyone.

I received this picture from a friend of mine who is a Greek Orthodox priest. How cool is that? He lives in Athens with his wife and two children, similar ages to mine. He's the sweetest man--couldn't bring himself to kill the gammarids (the sea version of the wood louse) he worked on during his PhD. Unfortunately his PhD was on toxicology of said beasties so he didn't get very far in academia.

He did get everything he ever wished for. Avoided conscription, fell in love and got married six months before his deadline—either enter the priesthood (after which he couldn't get married) or join the army (which would have been like putting Bambi in a uniform).

If ever there was a case for divine intervention/destiny Dimetri was it.

Joy and Peace to All.

A break from Christmas Cheer

Name the planets--without looking them up. Winner gets... kudos :)

This is Venus, my ruling planet--who else looks up their stars for the coming year?

Here's mine for the week from FreeWill--awesome :)

Taurus Horoscope for week of December 21, 2006
Verticle Oracle card Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Happy Holy Daze, Taurus! I've been meditating on the perfect holiday gift for you. What item might inspire you to take maximum advantage of the cosmic currents in 2007? I've decided on Winning With Integrity: Getting What You're Worth Without Selling Your Soul, a book by sports agent Leigh Steinberg. It'll help you be both smart and heartful as you navigate your way through the negotiations you'll be called on to do in the coming months. Here's a taste of Steinberg's advice. (1) Align yourself with people who share your values. (2) Learn all you can about the other party. (3) Create a climate of cooperation, not conflict. (4) Learn to listen. (5) Convince the other party you have an option, even if you don't.

PS. Loreth's contest is AWESOME for readers or writers... And it ends on Christmas Day. Still time....

Desire

I have two projects planned for the New Year. One is going to be an attempt to write a Silhouette Desire novel and the other is to write a romantic mystery.

It many ways they are opposites, but writing the Desire should help me explore getting more emotion on the page. So that's my plan. January first (OK, we're having a Hogmanay party, so January second) start writing a Desire story. I'm going for a fast write on this story--write through to the end in one go (with minor edits) and then polish those first three chapters for the partial. Then in Febuary sometime, start the romantic mystery. I'm planning a series arc and book arcs, so it'll be a lot more work and a lot more planning.

I've started my notebooks/scrapbooks for each so I can write down any ideas that come to me without getting too sucked into the other story.

Oh--and Colin? He's my Desire hero. Gotta love him :)

Happy Birthday Granny!

Dear Santa,

Help. I need lots of help!!! Desperately in need of a clean house and cooked food for Christmas. The laundry needs doing, last night's pans are still in the sink. DH's presents need wrapped and then I have to dust and vaccum the house and poop scoop the yard. There's ironing to do, bathrooms need scrubbed, dogs need walked, cooking needs done and then if you could possibly drag my husband from his work at some point that would also be good.

Please send the elves around and I'll make it worth their while,

Love. Me. Desperate of Canada.

Goose

I think I'm going to buy my Christmas groceries today--is it too early?

But isn't it crazy that we stock up with a week's worth of food when the shops only close for one day?

I wish the shops closed for longer. I wish Boxing Day was a day of snoring rest. I really hate the fact that the world never seems to stop anymore. Does anyone else remember when shops didn't open on Sundays? I'm not very religious, but I always really liked the idea of quiet Sundays...

Oh... and we got a goose for Christmas. Poor Jemima :(

PS. Check out this link. Who would spend that sort of dosh over the internet? And can I have some please ;)

Happy Birthday to my wonderful DH. Wow. Caught up with me again ;)

Movie Spoilers

I'm still feeling tired. Think I may have picked up a cold but I'm fighting it. Thought I'd tell you about a couple of movies I watched recently... and these are just my opinions--feel free to disagree.

Click. Adam Sandler playing Adam Sandler. I know he can act, I saw him in Punch Drunk Love and finally saw that he can act. But this movie is boring and PREDICTABLE. Terrible. No comic moments at all. How many times can you show a dog/dogs humping a stuffed duck? It just isn't fuuny. Kate Bekinsale looked incredible though. Oh my, where is my diet :)

The Lake House (LAKE HOUSE Deb). I loved this movie. It was beautifully shot, the story unusual and taut. James Patterson always gives his stories a twist and this one just was so full of style. And Sandra and Keanu. Muah.

Loved it. DH loved it too. And he hated Click too.

United 93. This was a hard movie to watch. I wondered how Hollywood would handle such a sensitive subject without bias or bravado. The movie highlighted the fact the US 'agencies' had no idea how to coordinate or avert this situation (hopefully now rectified). It highlighted the fact the terrorists were real people, with strong beliefs they were willing and eager to die for. It highlighted the bravery and humanity of the people on that flight. I mean can you really imagine what they went through?

Made me think about the villains in my stories. They are always the heroes of their own stories. Remember this when you're writing people doing terrible things. It was an excellent reminder to me.

I haven't watched the World Trade Center movie yet--anyone here seen it??

New Printer

Well--my wonderful in-laws saw my daughter's letter to Santa and on it she'd included something for me. No, not Eric or Sean, :D but a color printer so I can better make my book notes a little more funky, as well as print out family photographs.

And guess what I (we) got as a big pressy while the Andersons were visiting? A Canon color printer. Thank thank thank you thank you, Mini and Pop. I don't think the gifts we've given even begin to compare...

And this afternoon I surfed the web for pictures of the hero and heroine and baddy of my Romantic Mystery--Tentatively titled Out of Tears (anyone know what that is?)--and as well as Sean Bean I came across an adorable shot of another of my heroes--Eric Bana. Isn't he a cutie?

Things about me

Facts about Toni... (I stole some directly from Kendra because they were true of me too :)

1) I'm a loyal friend, but once I'm done with someone--I'm done...

2) I love painting and drawing--haven't done anything for a while and feel it calling to me.
Could I paint the snow outside the house? Or the house across the street. Or the dog?

3) I have two pets--both dogs. I am allergic to cats.

4) I love Suzanne Brockmann. Next time I see her I think she'll have me arrested for unadulterated adoration.

5) I hardly ever carry a purse/handbag. When the kids were little I had a bag packed with enough stuff to get us through any emergency for 24 hours. Now I carry my wallet and everyone is on their own.

6) I love the feel of paper when it has just come off the printer. LOVE that warm sensation and often cuddle big piles of warm paper.

7) I have blood pressure so low I spend days feeling dizzy (at least that is my excuse).

8) I hate when I make mistakes. I remember things I did fifteen years ago that still make me cringe with annoyance. And let's not talk about the fish....

9) I'm opinionated and difficult, but when it comes to salesmen or people begging for money I'm the world's biggest pushover--to the extent I'm not allowed to make any financial decisions/big purchases on my own. Contractors have to go through my hubby. BTW--that is my rule, not his.

10) I love country music, Bruce Springsteen and Motown. Call me weird.

Knackered

I'm knackered. Inlaws flew home this morning and my son was awake between 3 and 4 am. And DH went to work at 3 a.m. Exciting house I live in :D

DH took me out at the weekend--Bingo Bowling. Classy stuff. I might have the energy to lift my weary finger tomorrow and visit everyone. I've missed you guys. I'm also clearing up/out my office and querying agents. Wish me luck ;)

Pants

Hello :) Sorry to be absent. Having a lovely time with the inlaws. They were a little shocked yesterday with the -33C windchill but we have warmed up overnight to a barmy -12C. Lovely.

I did go to the Mountain Equipment Coop and bought fleece pants (trousers). I didn't even try them on--I just know they are going to be fantastic next time it hits -40C. My pants rock :D

And on that note--I SWEAR all my trousers are shrinking. Maybe I am just getting fat, maybe it is the thermals, or maybe there is a global conspiracy about shrinking pants!

I was reading this yesterday--about the National Counterterrorism Center, the NCTC Article link (and video).

What struck me was the fact they brought in Hollywood people to help them create the space for this multi agency operation. Isn't that just weird? Isn't it crazy how fiction shapes reality? Isn't it crazy the people in charge of these hugely important and sensitive arenas seem to have little real vision and very very narrow fields of expertise? Thank God for fiction. They seem to be getting things right now, talking to each other, sharing information. I love this sort of fiction, but I'm pretty sure the reality would not be for me.

Christmas List

My inlaws arrive tonight so I must clean bathrooms and sweep up dog hair. A meme :)

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot chocolate
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Wraps them with a lot of care for a man about to climb down a chimney.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? Colored this year
4. Do you hang mistletoe? If I can find any :)
5. When do you put your decorations up? Before DH's birthday.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish? Cold turkey sandwiches on Boxing Day--with salt and pepper.
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child: Visiting my elderly relatives on Christmas morning and being given sherry from a young age. On an empty stomach :)
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? What truth about Santa?
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? No way. I am the present Nazi.
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Doesn't matter how I decorate it, the dogs and kids redecorate it. And DH has no sense of style so I'm pretty much doomed.
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Ask me in the spring.
12. Can you ice skate? No. I'm a disaster.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift? No. I just remember lots of great gifts.
14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Family.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? Mince Pies.
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Used to be visiting those relatives and Midnight mass. I think we'll try and find a Carol service this year and reinvent a tradition.
17. What tops your tree? Was a star my MIL bought us, but that unraveled last year and I just bought a lovely (but cheap) angel.
18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? Giving.
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? Santa Claus is coming to town--Bruce Springsteen and White Christmas by Bing Crosby (who would name their kid Bing BTW?)
20. Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum? Yuck.

7 Layer Cake

Easy recipe and all the men who've tried it love it. Would have taken a picture but I forgot. I picked this recipe up in a very ritzy shop in Key Biscayne last year.

#1 Melt stick of butter in a 9X12 inch pan
#2 Sprinkle Graham cracker crumbs to soak butter (1-1.5 cups).
#3 Spread choc chips all over (1 bag 8 oz)
#4 Spread butterscotch chips all over (1 bag 8 oz)
#5 Spread crushed walnuts all over (1 bag) We leave this out so I guess ours is a 6 layer cake :)
#6 Sprinkle shredded coconut all over (1 bag)
#7 Pour over evenly 1 small can of condensed milk.

Pop in oven at 350 for 20-25 mins until top browns. Take out. Cool and cut into squares.

December Giveaway

Finally the day is here when I actually give something away LOL. I know, it has taken a while, but what can I say I'm tight :)

I am giving away the SHADOW SOLDIERS trilogy by Loreth Anne White and also a copy of my ebook Her Sanctuary.

Why? Well why the devil not? It's December and the season of goodwill.

This is a thank you to my friends--lurkers and all.

All you have to do is guess my height in cm. Not even I know that so I'll get DH to measure me, or convert the feet and inches. Whoever is closest, wins. I'll Announce the winner on December 10th--because that is the day Loreth runs the Honolulu marathon and we can all cheer her on--plus the mail might actually make it before Christmas and you'll have a rare treat!
