The Devil Wears Prada

Oh, I just saw this movie. I'm not into fashion so didn't expect it to be that good. But it was brilliant. All those little details of storytelling craft incorporated into the movie--making every detail count--it made me wonder if the book was even better? Anyone read it?

Glenn Close (oops I mean Meryl Streep) was amazing. Anne Hathaway was engaging. All the supporting cast were great. But I hate the fact thin is in!!! However, they're not normal in the fashion industry, so I won't worry about my butt being much larger than a 00 or 02. Yikes. We won't go there.

I've ordered this through Zip. Can't wait to see it!

Thin is in? Yikes! I'd better get on it! ;)

If thin is still so "in" how come a lot of fashion shows in Spain and Brazil won't allow the really skinny ninnies to participate. Actually I'm glad that they're starting to be more sensible. When I was growing up, size 6 was the lowest size. How does one get to be 00 or 02? My brother, sister-in-law and I were talking about this very thing on the drive from Brampton to London on Boxing Day.

Mind you, I did know a Chinese girl whom you barely saw if you looked at her sideways.

My sister hopes to come down to help me pack and move a few things today. But the weather is kind of iffy with snow near Orillia, their closest big town and icy rain here. I'd really hate to have anything happen to her in any attempt to help me. So we'll see how the roads really are tomorrow and go on from there.

Is Winnipeg getting better? What about Cold Lake, Meretta? By the way, Toni, which area of Wpg do you live in? We lived in west Charleswood almost at Perimeter Highway. At the time, we still had cows next door and one morning we woke up to find them in our front yard. Now all that area is covered with houses. We lived on Southboine Drive, previously Assiniboine Dr. so who knows what it's called now. One of my best friends lives out in Headingley right on Roblin Blvd.

Have a great day, Toni. One of these days I'll get "Sanctuary". Did you sell another book too?

Actually that should be "how the roads are later today". It's already 0430 EST.

Haven't seen the movie or read the book, I'll have to put it on my list.

And we won't talk about butts. If someone were to put lights on mine, they would be able to see if from the space shuttle. :(

I believe you are speaking of Meryl Streep, and not Glenn Close. Streep was nominated for her performance. The movie was a lot of fun, and the basis for the Ugly Betty series as it turns out. I wouldn't give Streep a nomination however, even though she was good, and tried something different as she always does. I just didn't think it was Academy level when you compared to past winners.

You know Scott-because of Cruella Deville I was completely switched on to it being Glenn. Of course it was Meryl!! Phew. She got an Oscar nom? I don't know who she's up against so couldn't comment. I thought she played the part very well--but the part didn't seem to be particularly worthy of an Oscar.

Meretta--I think in those places thin is always in, but we live in the real world!! Thankfully ;)

Ruby--nice to see you :) I'm glad we are getting more normal models. I don't think my skeleton is size 02! Winnipeg is not getting better, buit our boiler was fixed thank goodness. We're in Fort Garry and have friends in Charleswood. That is a nice area. Good luck with the packing--I hate that! Fingers crossed for travel plans.

Bails--Space Shuttle!! Good one ;)

Thanks for the review. Been wanting to rent this movie, but also was hesitant. Will check it out now.

I did really enjoy this movie--but I was also watching it very carefully from the perspective of it being a book turned into a movie.

It was very well constructed and delivered from a storytellers POV.

I guess what I'm trying to say is it isn't brilliant like Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan or stories about life and death struggles, but it is a struggle of morality--which is the fundamental one to all human beings.

Breathe out :)

I know what you mean about watching a story from a different -- a writer's -- perspective, Toni.

This is one movie DD2 just loved, and has seen twice. I saw it on the plane, so I don't think to comment is fair. You know how it is tyring to watch something around people going to the washroom, and delivering drinks? You kinda miss a few things ;-/

But Meryl is gorgeous. As always. I love her.

I half-watched the movie on the airplane this fall. I knew I wouldn't be able to give it my attention so I wanted to wait until it comes out on HBO or something.

I'm not getting into the whole fashion/weight debate. I could go on a rampage with that one.

I want to see it, too!

I'm also thrilled that some fashion shows are not allowing rail-thin models to participate. I was ecstatic when I saw that story on the news.

I think my DD would love it too :)

I can't watch movies on airplanes. Usually the kids needing help, but the headphones give me headaches. Woe is me ;)

If thin is in then count me out. Way out! I'd like to see the movie though. Is it out on DVD already?

It was on Video on Demand. Bound to be out now...

Haven't seen this yet, may have to talk hubby into renting it.
As for the weight debate. When did healthy become fat?

Very good point Brandy!!

We're still cold in Cold Lake, Ruby! But we're hoping for near freezing temps tomorrow rather than dipping into the -30s!

I've read the book and seen the movie and both are wonderful. The book is a thinly autobiographical account of Lauren's year as a personal assistant to Vogue's editor-in-chief, Anna-what's-her-name, who's given a cameo in the book. The movie sticks extremely close to the book so it's not a disappointment. Ugly Betty is a great take-off, with Wilhemina as Streep, and Daniel providing his own moral/ethical challenges. I love America Ferrara but I wish she'd lose those braces! At least this first episode this season she's colour coordinated. And when she said to Selma Hayak, "I don't see anything of myself in you." - that's practically the last line in the movie. And I can remember size 6 being the lowest size, and I could fit into a size 7! Now my DD is a size 7, or 8 depending on the brand.

I watched it Wednesday and was bored. I do really want some silver hoop earrings now, though.
