UK to Canada

Well, we made the journey from Shropshire to Vancouver Island without incident (2 long car journeys, 2 short & 4 plane rides). Not even scissors in the rucksack phased us. We spent 1 night in Winnipeg and all felt a pang to see our house and our friends and then have to take off again the next day. But it was fabulous to see DH again :) We're staying at the Bamfield Marine Station on the edge of the Pacific Rim National Park.
So this is what I did today...went down to see if DH had any sharks in his shark tank. Saw divers surface off the pier. Watched a starfish the size of a small dog grazing on barnacles. Did the washing (less glam, I know), went to Pachena Bay and saw Ospreys fish. And Bald Eagles. And Golden Eagles. Un-be-lievable.

Being home--Broseley

I love being home in my parents' house especially as it is up for sale now and this might be my last chance!

We moved here when I was 6 years old. :) That's a long time to live in one place. It has a creepy cellar and six bedrooms and tiled victorian fireplaces, plus an original Coalbrookedale cast iron fireplace. It also has the biggest shed in the world...

And a resident mommy blackbird with 5 chicks!

And the flowers in the garden...

It's so peaceful here. I don't want them to move and yet it is way too big for them. :( Sad to think that when I leave here this time it will be for the last time, but hopefully they will find something even prettier and more manageable.

Shrewsbury--a Medieval town

This week we went for a wander in Shrewsbury in the heart of Shropshire. It is one of my favourite towns because it has lots of gorgeous little shops and hundreds (660) listed buildings. When I was a teenager me and my friend, Deb, used to get the train here and there was this little coffee-shop that did the most amazing creamy hot chocolates ever. Ruined me for life :)

My dad used to get the train with his canoe and paddle back down the Severn to Ironbridge. It sounds like a really nice thing to do :) Shrewsbury was the site of the famous battle of Henry IV in Shakespeare's play Henry IV part 1, Act 5. And as he got an arrow in the face during the battle it was nearly the last act. Using methods that today's surgeons might learn from the King survived and won the day. It was also where Charles Darwin was born and a host of famous people attended Shrewsbury School from Michael Palin, John Peel, to Willie Rushton.
If you zoom in you can read the plaque?  I think it says, "Ye Ancient House in which King Henry 7th Loged when he went to Bosworth field ??? 1485.  So that was during the British Civil war.
My favourite shop!!!  The sweet shop :)

This is where we had that hot chocolate all those years ago :)

It was a great reminder of how beautiful Shropshire is :)

One thing we felt we had to do in Scotland was take the kids into Edinburgh. It is such a beautiful city. We managed to catch up with loads of friends too so it was an awesome day :)

Prince's Street Gardens...
Can you read this sign? The Writers' Museum???
The Castle...
Can you guess whose child was inserted into Mons Meg????
The Bass Rock from the Castle...

I just love this city :)

On the Mail Boat--Loch Lomond

To finish our Loch Lomond adventures, last Thursday we took the mail boat out onto the Loch.  The same family have been running mail out to the people who live on the islands in Loch Lomond since 1948.

Above: The mail boat from Balamaha
Ben Lomond brooding in the clouds
Above: Dropping mail in this tin box on one of the islands...
Below: Inchmurran where you can stop for an hour and have lunch
How would you like to live on an island?  I quite fancy it :)
On the way home...

Going UP Ben Lomond

I have a confession to make--I didn't climb 3196 feet to the top of Ben Lomond (this time) but the rest of the family did, from 6 to 72!! They had snow and got sunburned--classic Scotland :)
You can see all the way out to the islands from the top of this Munro. I'm exhausted just thinking about it!!
